About majors

Since its inception in 1996, Catholic University's Graduate School of Social Work has experienced significant growth in both quantity and quality. The expansion of faculty members, the admission of excellent field talents, the establishment of curricula that respond to changes in the social welfare system and field, and the establishment of networks among students and between students and alumni, as well as the reemployment of non-majors in the welfare field due to career advancement, are major indicators of the growth and strength of the Graduate School.

With excellent faculty members covering various fields of social welfare, the graduate school attracts excellent talents from the social welfare field and prospective students who are considering entering the field, discussing and sharing various issues raised in the field. The network among the more than 2,000 alumni who have graduated contributes to the growth of the graduate school as well as the current students.

Objectives

Department of Social Welfare

In the field of social welfare policy and administration, a wide range of curricula are offered, ranging from historical examination of social welfare development to exploration of alternative social security systems that can respond to future social changes. In the field of social work practice, the curriculum covers micro-level social work practice such as art therapy, as well as various practical issues in the field of mid-range social work practice such as children, youth, and women. In addition, the department offers a research methodology curriculum, including quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, to systematically train students in research, analysis, and report writing required in social work practice.

Department of Medical Social Work (including Addiction)

This department is the first medical social work department in Korea and has been leading the field of medical social work for the past 20 years. Professionals in various fields, including social workers, nurses, hospice and palliative care workers, and nursing facility workers, are practicing medical welfare that they have studied and researched in this department. In addition, the department has strengthened its addiction-related curriculum, including addiction and social work practice, addiction and prevention and treatment, and addiction and recovery, in order to foster human resources who can effectively respond to the increasingly diverse and serious addiction problem. This department will further strengthen your capabilities if you are interested in medical welfare and addiction.

Gerontology

The Department of Gerontological Welfare was established to systematically address the problems of poverty, health, and care of the elderly that arise with the rapid growth of the elderly population and to train professionals who are key to creating a welfare society. In this department, you will explore general issues related to the elderly, such as their health, income, and long-term care, and conduct lectures and research to acquire specific skills such as institutional management and practical methods to solve these problems. It will be a good educational environment for applicants who want to work as a care manager or social worker in the care field, such as facilities, day and night care centers, and home care agencies.

Mental Health and Social Work (including Developmental Disabilities)

The curriculum of the Department of Mental Health and Social Welfare promotes philosophical and theoretical understanding of severe mental illness and developmental disabilities, which are recognized as diseases in modern society but have many limitations in medical approaches, and covers various policy approaches and field practices in housing, employment, daily life, and advocacy to support community living based on a rich understanding of people with severe mental illness and developmental disabilities. In doing so, the Department of Mental Health and Welfare aims to contribute to the development of welfare in our society by fostering professional practitioners in the field of mental health and welfare who have a wealth of knowledge and practice capabilities regarding severe mental illness and developmental disabilities.
